Amazon's main image rules
The main product image (the first image, shown in search results and at the top of the listing page) is the most regulated. Amazon's requirements are strict and non-negotiable:
- Pure white background: RGB (255, 255, 255). Not off-white. Not light grey. Pure white.
- Product fill: The product must occupy at least 85% of the image frame
- No props, text, or logos: Main images must show only the product. No lifestyle elements, no brand overlays, no "NEW" badges
- No mannequins showing for apparel: Clothing on models is allowed; on mannequins visible as mannequins is not
- No watermarks or borders: Images must be clean and unobstructed
- Real product only: CGI or illustrated images are not permitted for the main image on most categories
Violating these rules triggers listing suppression — your product disappears from search results until the image is corrected. This can happen immediately or weeks after launch, with no warning.
Additional image slot rules
Amazon allows up to 8 additional images (slots 2–9) with significantly more flexibility:
What's allowed in additional images:
- Lifestyle photography (product in use, in context)
- Infographics with text overlay (dimensions, features, usage instructions)
- Comparison charts (this product vs. competitor)
- Close-up detail shots
- Multi-angle views
- Packaging images
What's still prohibited:
- Offensive content
- Competitor brand names in images
- Amazon's logo or badges
Additional images are also where brands differentiate their listings. A well-designed set of 7–8 additional images — with clear infographics, lifestyle context, and feature callouts — can significantly outperform a listing with only the main product shot.
Technical image specifications
| Parameter | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Minimum size | 1000×1000px |
| Recommended size | 2000×2000px or larger |
| Maximum size | 10,000px on longest side |
| File formats | JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF |
| Colour mode | RGB or CMYK |
| Maximum file size | No hard limit, but compress to <3MB |
Amazon's zoom feature activates when the image is at least 1000px on the short side. For the best zoom experience, use 2000×2000px or larger. Zoom is one of the highest-impact conversion features on Amazon listings — don't sacrifice it by uploading small images.
Common violations and how to avoid them
Off-white backgrounds: The most common main image violation. Many "white" backgrounds are actually #F5F5F5 or similar — visible as grey under Amazon's enforcement algorithm. Test your images by opening them in an image editor and checking the background RGB value. It must read 255, 255, 255.
Insufficient product fill: Products photographed with excessive padding around them fail the 85% fill requirement. Crop tightly to the product, leaving only a small margin.
Props in main images: A beauty product photographed on a marble surface with flowers? Props like these suppress your main image. The surface, flowers, and marble must be absent from the main image (though they're fine in additional images).
Text overlays on main images: "New Formula," "Clinically Tested," "SALE" overlays on the main image are violations. These belong in additional images or A+ Content.
If you're unsure whether your image is compliant, check Amazon Seller Central's listing health dashboard. Non-compliant images are flagged here before they cause suppression.
A+ Content image requirements
A+ Content (formerly Enhanced Brand Content) allows registered brand owners to add rich content modules below the fold of their product listings. Image requirements differ from standard listing images:
| Module type | Recommended size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Full-width banner | 970×300px | Text safe zone is inner 50% |
| Standard image with text | 300×300px | Product or lifestyle |
| Comparison chart | 250px per column | Table format, no images |
| Image carousel | 350×175px | Up to 6 images per carousel |
A+ Content images don't require white backgrounds and can be heavily lifestyle-oriented. Brands using A+ Content report 3–10% conversion uplift compared to standard listings.
Generating Amazon-compliant images
WaffleIQ's Amazon preset generates main images that comply with all technical requirements:
- Pure white (255, 255, 255) background by default
- Product fills 85–90% of frame
- Clean edges, no props or overlays
- 2000×2000px output, JPEG format
For additional images and A+ Content, WaffleIQ generates lifestyle and scene-based images at the exact dimensions required for each Amazon module type.
